Alert Type: Curfew For Teens
Description: The last couple of weeks teenage boys or a mixture of boys and girls riding BMX-style bicycles have been spray painting and playing Ding dong Digit late at night.

IMPORTANT NOTE: any minors outside after the 12 midnight Boise curfew should be immediatally reported to the Boise Police. The police will come out and create a profile on these teens so that they are being watched and on notice with the police.

Date & Time: Thurs, August 12, 2010
Alert Type: Scam Warnings
Description: I received information about another alarm company selling security systems door-to-door.   This one does (as of today) have the Boise City License to sell, but they are telling residents about the "burglary down the street that recently occurred" to make their sale. Many solicitors use scare tactics and fear to make their sales, and they often prey on elderly residents who live alone or those who don't know their neighborhood well. Just because a company is licensed with Boise City does not mean their business practices are ethical, but it means we have some information and contact names for them.

If you answer your door (which you don't have to do) to solicitors, ask them for the Boise City License to sell, and if they don't have one (for any excuse) you can shut the door on them. If any solicitor attempts to use scare tactics by telling you of crime in the neighborhood, that should also be a warning to you. You don't need to take their word for crime in your area. Get on the internet and go to www.adasheriff.org, click on Crime Mapping, type in your address and click on the listed crime types. That will give you a map of reported crime within the last 3 months. Or, you can contact me to find out if there has been recently reported crime in your area.

If someone down the street was burglarized, was it preventable? Maybe the victim forgot to close their garage door and that's how the criminal entered the home. There is quite a difference between a random burglary and a rash of residential burglaries through forced entry. I think a security system can be very effective, but we also need to make sure we are using basic security measures to prevent most burglaries:

When you consider the security of your home, think of preventive measures you are currently using:

  • Do you have good quality dead bolt locks on all your entry doors, including the door connecting your home to the garage? If you have them, do you use them during the day as well as the night?
  • Do you have 2 - 3" screws in the strike plate (where the bolt goes into the door frame) which makes it more secure?
  • Do you keep your garage door shut when you are not using it?
  • Do you have windows that are secured? You can secure them so they can be opened 4 - 5 ", and you get fresh air.
  • Do you have a peep hole or a window in your front door so you can see who is at your door before you open it?
  • Do you have properly positioned outside lights that come on at night and go off in the morning (dusk-to-dawn) or motion sensor lighting?
  • Do you remove your personal property from your vehicle and then lock the vehicle?
  • Do you keep your shrubs and trees pruned or trimmed, especially those that are around your windows and doorways?
  • Do you know and talk to your neighbors, and help keep watch over each other's property?

If you are consistently using the above measures, your chances of being burglarized are reduced drastically, because most residential burglaries (break-ins) are through unlocked doors, open garage doors, and unsecured windows. If you want to know more about securing your home without feeling like you're living in a fortress, feel free to contact me.

If you are considering a security system, look at a few different companies, check them with the Better Business Bureau, ask for references from the companies, and find out how long they've operated in Boise.   Ask friends who have a system about how user-friendly it is and their experience with the company. There are a number of different types of security systems available, so do some research to find the one best for your needs. Be informed and be wise!

Alert Type: Suspicious Activity
Description: I just wanted to inform everyone that last night at about 11:45 we had two men around the ages of 18 in our back yard. My husband heard them in our neighbors backyard saying something about their BBQ. They then jumped the back fence to the McMillian side of the street. He then watched as they hid in the bushes for about five minutes until traffic subsided. They jumped into our backyard. One of the men was carrying a white five gallon bucket. My husband yelled at them and they took off through my gate onto Goldenbrook on the night of June 21st at about 11:45PM into a vehicle that was waiting for them. The cops were called but we could not get the make or color of the vehicle. I just wanted everyone to know. Nothing was taken or damaged but there intentions did not look good

Lock Your Vehicles And Do Not Leave Valuables Inside When Parked Outside
The Legends Sub-Division has a history of vehicle break-ins when parked outside the closed garage. If you must leave valuables in the vehicle, hide them out of view as seen through the windows, such as under the seat or locked in the glove compartment. The pattern related to many of these break-ins seems to include the following: entry through an unlocked door; valuables visible from the windows; windows not broken; time of break-in usually during darkness.

If you experience any crime to your person or property, please immediately report it to the Boise Police Department. Secondly, if possible, please contact the Legends Neighborhood Watch Liaison @ talk2mide@msn.com and provide the details of the incident so the sub-division can be informed via website and email distribution. Lastly, please take time to send the HOA your updated emails so we can keep you updated on any neighborhood alerts or activities.

Leave Outside Porch/Garage Lights ON
It is very important to keep your outside porch and garage lights on all night.  The cost is minimal and the reduction in crime of well-lighted neighborhoods is well documented.  Considering that our neighborhood does not have yard lamp posts, it is even more important for people to keep the exterior of their homes well lit.  If you would like additional information, check out the Home Security Book "Preventing Burglaries--How to Protect Your Home" in the Library section at the bottom of this page.

Door-To-Door Solicitors
You don't need to open your door to anyone you don't know or are not expecting. Use your wide-angle peephole or a window to see who is ringing your doorbell before you open the door.  If you open your door to a solicitor, ask immediately for a Boise City license.  Each sales person must be licensed by the city to sell products.  If they don't have a city license, call police dispatch 377-6790, and give the dispatcher your location, the description of the sales people and their vehicle.  Make sure to inform the dispatcher that the person(s) are unlicensed.

Citizens can tell Traffic Concerns to Police Online
Boise Police have created a way for citizens to communicate their neighborhood traffic concerns - go online.  The new online traffic concern reporting system will send the citizens report directly to the BPD Patrol office, where it will be sent directly to officers who patrol that area.  The online system will also provide a copy of the report to the citizen for them to document the report.  Go to www.boisepolice.org and click on “Traffic Enforcement.”  The site takes citizens through the steps to communicate a general  or very specific traffic concern.  Officers will use the reports either to increase enforcement, or to explore other possible solutions.

A vacant house—or one that appears to be vacant—is an appealing target to a burglar.
